Anatomy of a Murder
This is probably the greatest courtroom drama ever made and it features James Stewart’s finest screen performance. Controversial in its day for using words such as ”panties” and ”spermatogenesis”, Otto Preminger’s film enthrals for nearly three hours as its story about a rape and murder unfolds. As hick lawyer (and jazz fan) Paul Biegler, Stewart is drawn into the case, suckered by it, and comes up against big-town prosecutor George C Scott. Their courtroom duels and stunts are mesmerising, revealing an America leaving its traditional moral values behind; this is the America not of apple pie but of Lolita. The judge, by the way, is played by Joseph N Welch, a Boston lawyer and outspoken critic of the McCarthyist witch-hunts, who got the part after Spencer Tracy and Burl Ives turned it down. That Stewart’s character loves jazz was a neat excuse to bring in the great Duke Ellington to write the soundtrack; Ellington even appears in one scene in a club, playing a duet with Stewart. The film is based on a novel by Robert Traver, the pen name of retired judge John D Voelker.

Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves
Rich oriental lord Cassim’s cheeky servant Ali Baba was sent to buy a meaty girl-slave, but brings dancer Morgiane, whom he is enamored with. When he’s part of a caravan robbed by Abdel’s 40 thieves, Ali hides in a camel hive and thus learns the secret of Sesame cave. With stolen loot he buys Morgiane and his own residence for him and beggar friends. Cassim not only gets him drunk to learn his secret gold source but also plans to rob him at the grand wedding with Morgiane. But Abdel observed them too and invites his 40 robbers.

Rod Steiger gives a magnificent performance as Napoleon - all hot rages and cool calculation as he heads for his destiny in Belgium - in this epic history lesson from Ukrainian director Sergei Bondarchuk. Steiger even manages to upstage the thousands of Soviet soldiers recruited as extras for the battle scenes, yet he’s nearly outshone by Christopher Plummer as the Duke of Wellington, whose arrogance shows his contempt for lower-class cannon-fodder. Bondarchuk filmed in Italy and the Ukraine, and the result is a mightily credible reconstruction of events that changed the course of western history. It’s the two major performances, though, that lift it out of the textbooks and give it humanity.

They climb the tree and into the boat only to find fresh bread and fresh footprints. Realizing that they are not the only ones who have discovered the treehouse boat, they decide to leave. When they reach the shore, they find the same footprint in their boat. And that’s when they meet Mud (Matthew McConaughey). Mud is a gritty, superstitious character; his clothes are dirty, his tooth is cracked, and he needs help.

He assembles a device allowing a person to initiate a three-chemical intravenous drip. The local D.A., the governor, and the Legislature respond. In court scenes, Kevorkian is sometimes antic. He’s single-minded about giving dying individuals the right to determine how their lives will end. He wants the Supreme Court to rule. He picks a fight he can’t win: is it hubris or heroism?
