The Eredivisie is the highest level of professional men’s football in the Netherlands and is organized under the Royal Dutch Football Association. Founded in 1956, the league consists of 18 clubs playing each other twice during the season, once at home and once away. The champions win the Dutch national title, while the lowest-placed clubs face relegation to the Eerste Divisie through automatic relegation and promotion/relegation play-offs. Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord have historically dominated the competition and are known as the traditional “Big Three” of Dutch football.
