   Memoirs of a Geisha

   In 1929 an impoverished nine-year-old named Chiyo from a fishing village is sold to a geisha house in Kyoto’s Gion district and subjected to cruel treatment from the owners and the head geisha Hatsumomo. Her stunning beauty attracts the vindictive jealousy of Hatsumomo, until she is rescued by and taken under the wing of Hatsumomo’s bitter rival, Mameha. Under Mameha’s mentorship, Chiyo becomes the geisha named Sayuri, trained in all the artistic and social skills a geisha must master in order to survive in her society. As a renowned geisha she enters a society of wealth, privilege, and political intrigue. As World War II looms Japan and the geisha’s world are forever changed by the onslaught of history.

Opening improbably and becoming increasingly implausible by the minute, the story turns on respectable dentist Steve Martin’s dangerous liaison with tearaway Helena Bonham Carter and her drug-dealing brother, Scott Caan. However, only Laura Dern as Martin’s prudish fiancée makes a comic impression. The rest are left floundering in a farce that seems beyond the control of its inexperienced director.

   The Broken Crown

    Chocolat

    Director Lasse Hallström followed up The Cider House Rules with this delightful romantic comedy drama, adapted from the novel by Joanne Harris. Set in the late 1950s, it stars Juliette Binoche as a rootless mother who appears overnight in a small French village and brazenly opens a chocolate shop - during Lent. Staunch Catholic mayor Alfred Molina disapproves of her lifestyle and fears the challenge to his authority, but Binoche’s confections are soon raising spirits (and more), particularly among the local wives. The arrival of handsome river gypsy Johnny Depp further inflames passions. Hallström skilfully creates a sense of the stifling nature of provincial life, and of a deeper spiritual malaise for which the bewitching Binoche offers a panacea. Watching this is the cinematic equivalent of putting a piece of chocolate in your mouth - a truly delicious experience.
