    The Truman Show

Since birth, a big fat lie defines the well-organised but humdrum life of the kind-hearted insurance salesman and ambitious explorer, Truman Burbank. Utterly unaware of the thousands of cleverly hidden cameras watching his every move, for nearly three decades, Truman’s entire existence pivots around the will and the wild imagination of the ruthlessly manipulative television producer, Christof--the all-powerful TV-God of an extreme 24/7 reality show: The Truman Show. As a result, Truman’s picturesque neighbourhood with the manicured lawns and the uncannily perfect residents is nothing but an elaborate state-of-the-art set, and the only truth he knows is what the worldwide television network and its deep financial interests dictate. Do lab rats know they are forever imprisoned?

    Love Song

Duke Sterling and Grady Connor came up through the country music industry together as a partnership. As Duke emerged the superstar, their partnership dissolved on bad terms over a dispute on a songwriting credit that ended up being one of Duke’s early hits. Although Connor has been able to keep his name in the business writing what have ended up being album filling songs for other artists, he needs a bona fide hit to keep on the A-list. As such, his manager is able to convince Duke and his manager that the two of them should enter into a one time song writing collaboration, that song for Duke to premier at his upcoming appearance at the Silverado Fall Music Festival. While that agreed to collaboration ends up not coming to pass again due to bad blood, Connor, in needing that hit, offers to write a song which Duke can use or not at his discretion at the festival and as a track on his next album. In Silverado, Connor meets Shayna Judson, on whose father Jeremy Judson’s property, White ...

    Step Up 2: the Streets

Following the death of her parents, teen-aged Andie West is living with her mother’s best friend, Sarah. Andie, who doesn’t care about school, is trying to figure out where she fits in in life. The only thing she loves is dancing with her street crew, the 410, led by Tuck. The 410 are the most notorious of the street crews in Baltimore and are wanted by the police for their acts of vandalism and public mischief. Sarah threatens to send Andie to live with relatives in Texas unless she cleans up her act, which includes ending her association with the 410 and trying harder at school. Andie’s neighborhood friend, Tyler Gage, convinces Andie to audition for entry into the Maryland School of the Arts (MSA), an institution which ended up turning his life around for the better. Andie passes the audition but isn’t sure she fits in there. The school’s director, Blake Collins, isn’t sure she fits in there either. Blake is a brilliant dancer but looks for conformity to his way. After learning that Andie’s absences from rehearsals are due to her new association with MSA, Tuck kicks her out of the 410. Chase Collins, a dance student at MSA, convinces Andie to start her own street dance crew using all the dance misfits from MSA i.e. those that don’t conform to Blake’s way of thinking. Chase feels like he’s one of those misfits being Blake’s brother and living in his shadow. This new association brings up a few conflicts within Andie, as her new dance crew tries to gain respect on the streets, especially among her old and judgmental friends, and as she and the crew try to hide the fact of what they’re doing from Blake, who ultimately threatens expulsion from the school of anyone participating in the illegal street competitions.

    Pearl Harbor

The surprise bombing of Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 was a major event in US history (awakening the sleeping giant and all that), but this attempt to capture it on screen by the big-thinking producer/director team of Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay (The Rock, Armageddon) is a huge disappointment. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the actual attack, which forms the middle act of the film’s bloated three hours, is an amazing spectacle - it’s almost worth the obscene $135-million budget. However, sheer cinematic power is undermined by our total lack of empathy for any of the cardboard cut-out characters who populate Bay’s advert-like world of slow-motion and colour filters (and baseball-playing kids to signify America - yes, we get it). Weaknesses of plot and characterisation are only amplified by the film’s unwieldy size and patriotic portent, and the script is toe-curlingly bad. Bruckheimer and Bay presumably think their love story and wartime heroics are charmingly old-fashioned. They have clearly not studied Casablanca or From Here to Eternity.
